Update your Windows PC to fix 6 zero-days

The update cycle is known as Patch Tuesday, and the December edition is packed with security fixes and privacy plugins. It will be the last of the year, and Microsoft is fixing 67 security vulnerabilities in its operating system.

Six of the vulnerabilities are zero-day vulnerabilities. Read on for more details and how to get this critical update.

Here is the backstory

As we mentioned, Microsoft’s December Patch Tuesday update fixes a total of 67 flaws. These range from remote code execution (RCE) bugs and elevated denial of service attacks.

The most serious vulnerabilities include six zero-day exploits, one of which spreads the Emotet botnet. Then there is a Windows Installer flaw referred to as CVE-2021-43883 which could give hackers elevated privileges. While the CVE-2021-43880 vulnerability allows hackers to remotely delete files on your computer.

A spoofing vulnerability known as CVE-2021-43890 is the only issue known to be actively exploited. The update also fixes a bug in the Windows AppX installer, where a hacker could enter your PC through malware.

According to the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) vulnerability tracking website, Microsoft had to patch 887 vulnerabilities this year. This is a 29% reduction in the number of defects compared to last year.

What can you do about it

As always, you need to keep your gadgets and computers up to date. Most updates introduce cool new features and patch vulnerabilities that cybercriminals could exploit.

To update your Windows PC, follow the steps below:

  • Press the the Windows button
  • Click on Settings
  • To select Update and security
  • By default, the Windows Update the page will be displayed
  • If an update is available, click the Install now button

In other security news, Apple rolled out iOS 15.2 on Tuesday. The update adds safety features, a way to protect children from harmful images, and a new way to listen to Apple Music.

Software giant Adobe also released 11 updates this week that fix 60 vulnerabilities in its products. These include fixes for Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
