Rufus is a small utility that can format and create bootable USB drives, such as thumb drives/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need! Oh, and Rufus is fast. For example, it’s about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or the Windows 7 USB Download Tool, on creating a Windows 7 USB installer drive from an ISO (with an honorable mention to WiNToBootic for successfully following). It is also slightly faster for creating Linux bootable USBs from ISOs. A non-exhaustive list of ISOs supported by Rufus is available here.

This can be particularly useful in cases where:

  • you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • you must be working on a system that does not have an operating system installed
  • you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • you want to run a low-level utility

Rufus 3.19 Beta Changelog:

Add a new selection dialog for customizing Windows 11 installation:

  • Secure Boot and TPM Bypass have now been moved to this dialog
  • Also bypasses mandatory Microsoft account requirement with Windows 11 22H2
  • (NB: The network MUST be temporarily disabled or disconnected for the creation of a local account to be offered)
  • Also add an option to skip all collection questions (sets all answers to “Don’t Allow”/”Deny”)
  • Also add an option to take internal drives offline with Windows To Go

To note: These customization options are only offered when using a Windows 11 image.

Other changes:

  • Added support for distributions using a non-standard GRUB 2.0 prefix directory (openSUSE Live, GeckoLinux)
  • Add ability to ignore USB sticks (see here for details)
  • Change the list of drives to always be listed in ascending order of size
  • Update exceptions required by Red Hat and its derivatives to the latest versions
  • Update UEFI:NTFS Drivers to Latest
  • Reassign a letter for disks written in DD mode that do not have ESP (CoreELEC)
  • Fix Windows refusing to mount Linux MBR partitions on FIXED drives
