Rufus is a small utility that can format and create bootable USB drives, such as USB sticks / sticks, USB drives, etc. Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need! Oh, and Rufus is quick. For example, it’s about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or Windows 7 USB download tool, on creating a Windows 7 USB install drive from an ISO (with honorable mention to WiNToBootic for having managed to follow). It is also slightly faster when creating bootable Linux USB drives from ISO. A non-exhaustive list of ISOs supported by Rufus is available here.

This can be particularly useful in cases where:

  • you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
  • you need to work on a system that has no operating system installed
  • you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
  • you want to run a low level utility

Rufus 3.16 changelog:

  • Fixed ISO mode support for Red Hat 8.2+ and its derivatives [#1777]
  • Fixed BIOS boot support for Arch derivatives
  • Fixed removing some boot entries for Ubuntu Derivatives
  • Fixed log not being saved on exit
  • Added support for Windows 11 “extended” installation (disables TPM / Secure Boot / RAM requirements)
  • Add UEFI Shell ISO downloads (applied retroactively through FIDO)
  • Added support for Intel NUC card readers
  • Improve support for Windows 11 [#1779]
  • Improve Windows version reporting
  • Speed up MBR / GPT erasure

Changes in Rufus 3.17:

  • Fix MBR not properly erased
  • Fixed hogger command line not being suppressed on exit
  • Improve ReFS management for platforms that support it
  • Update UEFI: NTFS to latest version and remove Secure Boot Notice because this version is signed by Secure Boot
  • Update Grub4DOS to the latest
