How to install Thinkorswim on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Linux

Here we are going to show you how to download and install the popular ThinkorSwim Trading platform on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Zorin, Debian, CentOS and others using a command terminal.

What is Thinkorswim?

Thinkorswim is an online trading platform developed by TD Ameritrade to allow users to trade various stocks, options, futures and stocks. Besides the online trading platform, the company also provides a dedicated desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux to trade efficiently with advanced tools, filters, and charts.

The app is available for free and can be used with TD Ameritrade and a few others. Well, once the Thinkorswim installation is complete on your Linux desktop, you will have free real-time quotes, hundreds of chart studies, option risk charts, and more.

Although the interface of this trading platform is complex and intended for advanced users, novice or less active traders can also use it for investing.

Steps to install Thinkorswim on Ubuntu 20.04 Linux

The commands and other steps given here will be the same for the latest Ubuntu 21.04 and the previous Ubuntu 18.04, including other Linux distributions.

1. Open the operating terminal

The first thing you need is the command terminal. For that, go to the app launcher and search for it or use the keyboard shortcut i.e. Ctrl + ALT + T.

2. Download the Thinkorswim Linux desktop app

As I said at the beginning of the article, there is a dedicated version of this trading platform that we can easily install on any Linux. Therefore, download its installation script using the command below.

sudo apt install curl -y
curl --output

3. Install Thinkorswim on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS linux

Now we have the script on our system, the next step is to run it under sudo installation rights on your Linux platform. No matter what Linux system you are using, the command will be the same for everyone.

If you already have Java on your system, you can skip this command, otherwise install JDK first using the given command:

The error without JDK that the system will generate:

No suitable Java Virtual Machine could be found on your system.
The version of the JVM must be at least 1.7.
Please define INSTALL4J_JAVA_HOME to point to a suitable JVM.

To install OpenJDK:

sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk

Then run the downloaded script:

sudo sh

4. Configuration wizard

When you run the script, a graphical installation wizard for the ThinkorSwim Linux desktop application opens. Press the Ok button.

Let the default destination directory be selected and just click on the ‘following button to advance.

Select your account provider. If you are new and want to use ThinkorSwim paper trading, just leave the default account option selected.

5. Thinkorswim Linux interface

Once installation is complete, the application will start. After updating, you will be asked to enter your account username and password. If you don’t have it, go to the official website of this trading platform and register one.
