Windows 11 is about to start rolling out to eligible devices, with a new design and tons of new features aimed at optimizing your PC and helping you be more productive. Whether you use your device at home or in the office, these new features will make your life easier.
Here are the best new Windows 11 features announced so far and how you’ll use them, based on what Microsoft has demonstrated.
Six new features in Windows 11 and how to use them
What it is: Android apps will be built into Windows 11 natively through the new Microsoft Store, a change Windows users have been waiting for for years. While you can access Android apps on your Windows 10 PC in some cases (like if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone), Windows 11 marks the first time anyone will be able to download them directly to their PC.
How you’ll use it: Android apps will be on the new Microsoft Store through the Amazon Appstore. This means that you will need to download Amazon’s Appstore to access the nearly 500,000 available apps including Disney Plus, TikTok, Netflix, Pinterest, Uber, and more. However, you will not be able to access all Android apps found in the Google Play Store.
To get started, you’ll need to download the Amazon Appstore and sign in or create an Amazon account. Then you can search for free or paid apps just like you would on any other platform. Android apps will be integrated into the launch bar and will also appear in the taskbar with their own windows.
What it is: Windows 11 will add widgets to the interface: a customizable AI-powered feed that slides in to show you information like news, weather, a glance at your calendar and your to-do list, and your recent photos. Widgets are similar to a feature called News & Interests found in a recent Windows 10 update.
How you’ll use it: On the newly redesigned taskbar you’ll find a button for widgets. Clicking or tapping on it will drag a panel to the left side of the screen with a series of widgets that will give you the information you’re looking for at a glance. You can also extend it to full screen.
What it is: Windows 11 will build the Microsoft Teams video chat platform right into the operating system, making it easy to access for everyday use. You can connect with other people in Teams on Windows, Android, Mac, or iOS.
How you’ll use it: Teams will now appear in the taskbar. Click the Teams icon to launch a chat tool, allowing you to choose to send a message, text, voice call, or video call to any of your contacts. Click Meet or Chat and choose who you want to communicate with. Or open the full version of Microsoft Teams by clicking the box at the bottom of the chat screen. What it is: Windows 11 will make it easier for you to create separate virtual desktops for each part of your life and customize them with different wallpapers, so that you can create a desktop for personal use , work, school, games or anything else, and easily switch between them. This is similar to the virtual desktop feature of macOS.
How you’ll use it: We don’t have as much information on how to set up the new desktops yet, but from Microsoft’s demo, it looks like once you do, you can do scroll down to filter it. and you’ll see a sliding window with the different desktops you’ve created, allowing you to switch between them with just one click.
What it is: When you’re working in a bunch of open windows, Windows 11 lets you arrange them in different screen layouts and saves all those windows in that arrangement.
How you’ll use it: When you open a window, you’ll see a button that looks like a square in the upper right corner, between the X and the minimize button. Click on it to see different layout options for this window and select the layout and position in the layout where you want to place this window.
What It Is: Snap Groups is the set of open windows you saved in Snap Layouts, found in the taskbar for easy access and recall, so you can minimize or maximize them as a group.
How you’ll use it: Hover your mouse over your browser in the taskbar (it’s not clear if you should use Microsoft Edge to do this, like Microsoft did in its demo). You will see the different groups of sites and applications that you have created. Click on the one you want to reopen the whole group.
